This piece is made from Red Cedar wood. The Red Cedar is actually a species of the juniper native to Eastern North America. It is a slow growing coniferous evergreen that can grow to 70 feet tall and live over 850 years. The fragrant wood resists decay and insect attack making it popular for lining closets, making storage chests and used for fence posts that come in direct contact with the ground. The heartwood is reddish to violet-brown with the sapwood almost yellow in color.
This Red Cedar was sourced in the Chattahoochee Plantation community near the Sope Creek paper mill ruins. Several large cedars were downed in the name of suburban “progress”, and were rescued to become art pieces to be cherished forever.
