This urn is made from Maple wood, an American favorite. Best known for syrup and displays of red, orange and yellow each fall, Maples grow throughout the Eastern and Central United States. Trees can reach 130 feet tall and the wood color varies from creamy white to grey to reddish-brown depending on the species. This piece is Spalted, a natural breakdown that produces dark contrasting lines creating dramatic figuring with beautiful results.
Working with a new tree service who just set up shop just down the road from our shop, we were invited to sample some of the wood stacked on the yard. Clark kept coming back to this Spalted Maple - between the crouches and the gnarly bark surface, we had to bring back a few pieces to work with. It was the neighborly thing to do.
